WELCOME IN!!!

this is really just a silly little passion project to document my millipedes that i’ll be trying to update over time. i’ve always been obsessed with millipedes and inverts ever since i was a little kid, but i just recently got my own two ivories this year!!

there’s zero pressure to read through these or keep coming back for updates, but always feel free to do so!! i looooove my babies and i’d love to share the experience with everybody!!! :D

feel free to drop name suggestions in chat or say hi!!

what are millipedes? —

millipedes are invertebrates that feed mainly on decaying plant matter. most species are calm and docile, curling into a tight spiral when disturbed.

where do they live? —

they thrive in dark and damp environments. this often leads them to accidentally invade homes after intense rains flooding their outdoor habitats or during droughts in search for moisture, as they require it to survive.

are they dangerous? —

they do not bite or sting, unlike centipedes, which they are often confused for. when threatened, millipedes do produce a defensive secretion that is mildly irritating to the average human skin.

oouoooououuu super top secret chat channel….. ooououu you’re impressed by my technical skills.. oooooououuuu

i don’t think i need to say this as it’s pretty clear, but extreme content warning for creepy crawlies and stuff of the sort ahead!! i understand insects and invertebrates aren’t for everyone and many people are freaked out by them and i by no means want to inflict that onto ANYBODY. so if you get a little icked out by them, feel free to click away! there’s no shame in protecting your peace, dude!!! =3

10/02/26 — they arrived!! i managed to get them both settled into their enclosure right before i left for therapy. when i returned an hour later, one was hidden beneath the leaf litter while the other was still exploring enthusiastically. unbeknownst to me, this would be the first sign of their drastically contrasting behaviors and personalities.

so little so moe!! these species (chicobolus spinigerus) grow to be up to 5 inches, they were both about 3.5 the last i checked here!

10/05/26 — about this time, i noticed one of them was missing an antenna and had a mildly damaged exoskeleton. this one showed to be much more reserved and cautious, compared to the other one that was significantly more active and adventurous. this is the one captured in the image to the right. i also noticed that they’re both female! awesomesauce!!!

millipedes and their brains are far too small and no where NEAR complex enough to develop personalities, as they’re driven by instinct and basic behaviors that ensure survival in the wild. although, most species have individual behaviors and routines wired in their little brains by genetics and their environment!! this explains why one of my millipedes is so enthusiastic and bold, while the other remains shy and hidden away, despite being incapable of developing complex personalities. environmental stress and molting cycles can also impact this behavior, but it’s still interesting regardless!

10/07/26 — here’s them both hanging out eating a grape together!! ivory millipedes aren’t necessarily social creatures, but they’ll happily tolerate a companion or more of the same species. but of course, it can absolutely vary with individuals within the species. around this time, i started noticing them hanging out together more often.

most millipede species have awful eyesight, as their eyes are only complex enough to tell the difference between light and dark, supporting their nocturnal behaviors. their antennae can sense anything from sound, vibrations, touch, taste, chemicals, smells, and so much more. their antennae are basically their eyes, ears, nose, and feelers!!

10/09/26 — AAUHEIEHEIUEIU MY BAAABEHS it’s very rare i find them separated during their waking hours and it’s so adorable. i understand they don’t form emotional bonds with eachother and this may just be occurring because of their environment and location preferences in the enclosure, but it’s still so cute to imagine they just like eachothers company. this will truly only be a problem if it occurs during their molting cycles.

10/11/26 — oh my god. she climbed up the entire side of her enclosure. she then proceeded to look at me like i was the problem here. i genuinely have no words that could describe my confusion….

most millipedes aren’t meant to be able to do this, as the glass walls of their enclosures are too smooth for their little legs to grasp onto. however, i got my enclosure off of facebook marketplace for $5 and it was meant for reptiles that typically don’t care for climbing the walls blindly. this means that the corners of the enclosure are held together by a rubbery adhesive that just so happens to be textured enough for my millipedes to climb.

10/12/26 — WHAT THE FUCK. THIS IS HER CLIMBING ON THE MESH LID OF THE ENCLOSURE UPSIDE DOWN

Asset

she found her way back to the corner and made it down safely but like…. what the fuck.. what could have possibly compelled her to do this….. her living conditions in the enclosure are phenomenal and i stress myself out to no extent to make sure of it…… why is she the way she is.. she is quite literally doing the opposite of what she’s designed to do. she’s meant to burrow DOWN in the DIRT, not make her way UP vertically into the SKY. this was such a crazy thing to wake up to. they are both still unnamed, but i'm sure you can guess which one this is

on a happy note, i found them sleeping together earlier in the day!! they’re so cute dude they’re in LOVE and NO one can tell me otherwise.

…..unless if they’re actually related. then maybe they’re not in love and they’re not girlfriends… that would be #weird
